#Menopause: The Change of Life Menopause is the transitional phase in a #woman’s life when #menstruation cease. This occurs as early as 40 or as late as 55 years old and usually spans one to two years. It is normally diagnosed in females after one year of irregular or absent periods. Menopause is only one event in the series of biological changes that occur between the mid-40’s and mid-60’s. Menopause occurring before 40 years old is termed premature and may need medical evaluation to determine the cause. The exception to this is following a hysterectomy and/or removal of the ovaries. How is Menopause Diagnosed? A blood test confirms changing hormone levels but often the following signs and symptoms are present. Physical changes (directly associated with decreased blood levels of female hormones): • Menstrual irregularity • Hot flushes (sensations of heat spreading from the waist or chest toward the neck, face and upper arms) • Headaches, dizziness, rapid irregular heartbeat • Vaginal itching and dryness, burning or discomfort during intercourse, beginning a few years after menopause • Bloating in the upper abdomen • Bladder irritability • Breast tenderness • Back ache • Fluctuations in weight Emotional changes (associated with lower hormone levels and conflicting feelings about aging and loss of fertility): • Tension • Anxiety • Fatigue • Sleeping difficulties may occur
