*Mockingjay* by Suzanne Collins A powerful conclusion to a powerful story. Kudos to Suzanne Collins for her imagination and her narrative craftsmanship. But...what can I say? This book made me feel bad. By the time I was halfway through there was no one I felt like rooting for. Rebel District 13 is even more totalitarian than the Capitol, and their leader is every bit as evil as President Snow. And Katniss...I never found her very sympathetic to begin with, but at the end she does something that earns my everlasting contempt. The Hunger Games trilogy is a stirring tale of a struggle for survival against evil forces, but during that struggle something vital gets lost, and the ending did not reassure me that the world of Panem is better off for having gone through the struggle. I seem to be a lone dissenting voice, but I dont find either the story or the protagonist very inspiring. But a story that can make you feel anything, good or bad, is quite an achievement, and Collins has earned her laurels.
