#MyThoughtOfTheDay: There are some successes to look at the campaign on Burnaby Mountain with the test hole drilling done by Kinder Morgan. The most obvious being the media attention took a few points off of Kinder Morgan’s social license for this project. There’s a few other qualitative results achieved as well (relationship building, reaching new audiences, coalition building, etc.) And. There is too much spiking the football going on. Let’s review: 1.) The court approved of Kinder Morgan’s application to conduct the test holes. The courts then denied their extension **due to a technicality**. 2.) The 100+ symbolic arrests did not in any way stop the test hole drilling. 3.) Kinder Morgan is still on track in every conceivable way they were a month ago to go ahead with this project. Nothing has changed there. It reminds me of the Idle No More rebellion a few years ago. There was a lot of things to draw on from that experience as being useful for the future organizing. Yet most of the intended goals of the Idle No More rebellion were never achieved in any way shape or form. People claimed they wanted to stop the Kinder Morgan pipeline. That didn’t happen. Kinder Morgan is packing up and leaving? Well, that has absolutely nothing to do with the protests, symbolic arrests, or mean muggin on the mountain. They are leaving because they got most of what they needed and they have a deadline. I know people want to celebrate but I am honestly left scratching my head going, What the heck is there to celebrate?. In my not so humble opinion, it’s deserving of perhaps a golf clap. But not a celebration.
