“Mystery creates wonder and wonder is the basis of man’s desire to understand.” – Neil Armstrong, American astronaut, the first man to walk on the Moon (1930-2012) Ever wonder how we got here? Not on earth, but how we got to this point in our lives where we are, believe it or not, clean and sober? Does this strike some of us as something of a mystery, a seeming impossibility, given where we came from? Ah, the mystery of life. We could well regard our recent transformation from addiction to the embarkation of our healing journey in sobriety as a profound mystery. Certainly, we would have good company if we did. Countless people in recovery can likely attest to having similar feelings. But we are here now. What does this mean in the grand scheme of things? What are we to look forward to? Have we entered recovery and are destined to do great things? What if we never accomplish anything earth-shattering or gain worldwide fame and recognition? Does this mean that we’ve somehow missed out? On the contrary, the mystery of life is something that each of us can come to appreciate – if not fully comprehend – in our own unique way. Certainly our journey from addiction to recovery is a testament to something akin to a miracle. If not a mystery, let’s call it that. Being at the right place at the right time and having the right amount of support also helped to a great extent, but there was still that unknowable factor, our own contribution, desire, determination, courage and persistence that played an important role as well. And, yes, we cannot discount the forces beyond our control, the assistance and guidance and encouragement we received from our Higher Power, our spirit, sense of self, mankind, nature – whatever we want to call it. If it all seems like something wondrous and inexplicable, that’s part of the mystery of life. We can strive to understand it, to make sense of how we arrived here and what we are to make of our live going forward. We can, if we like, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But here is a suggestion that might serve us better. Be like a child and take in the wonder of life around us. Learn something new each day so that we can add to our growing storehouse of knowledge. Feel good about our accomplishments. Treasure our relationships. Do the very best we can in everything we do. Share our joy with others so that they can smile and feel good about life as well. As we go forward, there will be many new and exciting discoveries, new friends, new activities to seek out and enjoy, as well as new skills to develop and talents to perfect. There is, in fact, no end to what we can accomplish and achieve. Why question the mystery of life? Instead, let’s just live it with a growing appreciation of all the riches life has to offer us in our journey on this earth.
