[NEWS] 140202 - [STARCAST] Lee Jong Suk’s Life Graph ‘a long lasting lovely actor’ He is going fast. After crisscrossing all over the screen and Braun, Lee Jong Suk came back as soon as we turned to the first page of calendar as a man who seems rather clumsy. Jong Gil of the ‘Blood Boiling Youth’ is a character with a threatening personality that differs from Lee Jong Suk ‘s image to the public. In the movie, Lee Jong Suk destructs himself and throws himself without a hesitation. It would be wrong to say that Lee Jong Suk has joined the group of actors with great skills in acting. The movie, however, contains his dedication and greed over becoming one. His efforts could be observed from his life-curve. # Rugged debut: Let me become an actor, please! Lee Jong Suk, who had a dream of becoming an actor, was casted to become a model on the street like a lot of stars did. He was 16 at the time. He is well known to be the youngest male model in our country. His neutral face features, slim body line, and walking were enough to charm the visitors of runways with a mystic mood. As soon as he debuted as a model, he was loved by many designers as a muse. The problem was that he wanted to be an actor not a model. He was lucky as a model but his luck didn’t extend to the acting field. His physical features kept him attached to the runway. “I agreed to the casting because I was told that I will be able to act but I was always on the runway.” He changed his company in hope of becoming an actor but the company put him into an idol group. “Idol training, do I have to draw this (on the graph) too? I don’t want to.” He remembers the 3 months as an idol trainee as tougher and drier period of his life than that of a senior in high school preparing for college admission. He had to get vocal and dance lessons, Japanese lessons and interview train, all of which wasn’t what he wanted. When he came back to his empty home after finishing the day’s lessons and practices like a machine, he felt empty inside. What made his life difficult the most was people. It would have been nice if he had a friend to whom he could talk to but he was always alone. I fought with the members often. They prepared for their debut for 2 years and I just came out of nowhere and joined them. I understood their hatred. Nevertheless, I didn’t ask to become a singer and the unfriendly relationship with the members made it harder.” There was no reason for him to hesitate. He had his heart on something else and he wasn’t about to give up. He left his second company and transferred to his current management company with actors and actresses. He was sued during the process as well. For 19 year-old Lee Jong Suk, the world was cold as the ocean in winter. # Life’s worst slump: frustration after his debut He finally got into an actors’ management company after all the frustration. He would have thought that everything was going to be better. “My hopes were high. I was finally becoming an actor.” His fate was provokingly competitive with him. “The company just left me hanging. I was about to go out of my mind.” So he waited 3 years just like that. He was rejected at some auditions too. In 2010, he finally made his debut as an actor with ‘Prosecutor Princess’. What has changed? Nothing. Not being able to move forward even after his debut made him feel terrible. “My sense of loss was greater after the debut. I thought I would go crazy if I didn’t do something, so I started a part-time job as a server.” As we can see from his life-curve, his frustration is the greatest during this period. A hope starts at the end of a frustration. Lee Jong Suk meets the drama, ‘Secret Garden’ at the end of his long journey through a dark tunnel. He was 21 at the time. “That’s Sunny!” “Isn’t he from ‘Secret Garden’?” People started recognizing him even though they didn’t really know his name. He didn’t stop himself at that. He wasn’t going to lose the chance that came to him. One thing he learned from his long waiting was that ‘luck only comes to the ones who ask for it’. At an interview he had said, “After the sitcom ‘High kick! Season 3’, I went out and sold myself to the directors.” It could be said that Lee Jong Suk’s success was a result of his efforts and not his company’s. As many know, ‘School 2013’ and ‘I Hear Your Voice’ are the results of his efforts. # Splendid flight: I hear the voice of Lee Jong Suk. If ‘School 2013’ was Lee Jong Suk’s leap, ‘I Hear Your Voice’ was his flight. He did great in both of the dramas and the watching rate for the ‘I Hear Your Voice’ was soaring. Requests for an interview and an advertisement filming contract were pouring on him. All in all, he received burning love from the public. Girls were destined to get their hearts stolen by Go Nam Soon from ‘School 2013’ with a tough and heartbroken character and ladies were destined to feel protective over Park Soo Ha from ‘I Hear Your Voice’. How would Lee Jong Suk record ‘I Hear Your Voice’ in his life-graph? “Receiving the offers for different roles and being called as a trend guy were the result of ‘I Hear Your Voice’. It was overwhelming to express the feelings that I had never felt but they helped me improve as an actor.” But life was tough. Was it someone telling him to keep it together? Before he enjoyed the happiness long enough, movie ‘Physiognomy’ and ‘No Breathing’ find him. ‘Physiognomy’ was filmed before ‘I Hear Your Voice’ and ‘No Breathing’ was filmed at the same time with ‘I Hear Your Voice’, but both of them were released after the drama. Lee Jong Suk’s situation as an actor was different from when he was filming ‘Physiognomy’ and when the movie was released. His movies were bound to have attentions. At the time, the critiques compared Lee Jong Suk’s progress with Kim Soo Hyun’s from ‘Moon Embracing the Sun’ to ‘The Thieves’. Lee Jong Suk in the movies was a disappointment to the public. In ‘Physiognomy’ he seemed uncomfortable as if he was wearing clothes with wrong sizes. In ‘No Breathing’, too much emphasis on his pretty face made the public feel rather uncomfortable about his charms. I am sorry to say this but ‘Physiognomy’ and ‘No Breathing’ were the products that clearly showed the difference between a star and an actor. I was thinking if I should tell him my thoughts about the movies when Lee Jong Suk who brought the subject up first. “I honestly thought that I did great when I was filming the movie, ‘Physiognomy’. When I was looking at the final product, however, I sweated out a basketful of sweat. Whenever I came on the screen, I felt like I was cutting the flaw of the movie. I was ashamed and blamed myself.” Lee Jong Suk knew about his shortcomings better than anyone and wasn’t afraid to admit them. Is he being too hard on himself? He might be. This could also be viewed as a strong confidence because admitting and uttering his shortcomings can mean that he is dedicated to improve himself. ‘Physiognomy’ became a great asset for his acting career. Lee Jong Suk’s acting has improved rapidly since ‘Physiognomy’. The first proof was ‘I Hear Your Voice’ and the second was the movie, ‘Blood Boiling Youth’. Looking at Lee Jong Suk throwing himself to play the character, Joong Gil, with traumatic and bluffing personality, the thought that this is true ability of Lee Jong Suk come to mind. If he didn’t learn from ‘Physiognomy’ among all the senior actors and actresses, he wouldn’t have been able to do so well in expressing his character on ‘Blood Boiling Youth’ as he did. As a smart actor with age of 27, Lee Jong Suk understands what tools he has and how he needs to use them, and that’s why I am curious about his future as an actor. # Soulless? “I do have a soul.” There’s an interesting point on Lee Jong Suk’s life-curve. He marks the period during which he was a MC of SBS ‘Popular Music’ with a comment, “with a nickname, soulless, I left a dark history.” “I was criticized so much for hosting the show without a soul. I didn’t want to make corny comments so I expressed everything simple and that must have made the viewers feel like I was being careless.” His own personality added to the issue as well. “I have a hard time standing in front of people. I shake a lot when I greet people on the stage too. I was so nervous.” How does he act then? “I am not myself when I act. I have the script, the environment and the emotions. I am not Lee Jong Suk at the time.” As known by many, his best friend, Kim Woo Bin is hosting the music program, ‘M!countdown’. When I asked about it he replied, “Hahaha, Woo Bin? He asked me how it was being an MC of a music program before he started the program. So I told him, just think that you are dead.” Despite his comment he smiled brightly as if he was proud that Kim Woo Bin was doing great on the show. # Life of the television kid Lee Jong Suk was a timid little boy when he was young. His father, who was worried about his personality, made him learn piano, taekwondo, art and baduk. He was okay with learning piano but taekwondo was not exactly his taste. When he was in 8th grade, Lee Jong Suk got his knee injured. During his rehabilitation, he got addicted to television instead of computer games like any other boys in his age did. That was the time when Lee Jong Suk developed his dream of becoming an actor. The thought of becoming someone like Kang Dong Won aroused inside little Lee Jong Suk. ‘I would like to be on a television~ I would really like to~’ 10 years after that, the boy who dreamed of his future as he watched TV is on the TV and is becoming a dream on someone else. You’d be able to guess from his life-curve that Lee Jong Suk is not the type to follow someone’s order. He is not a type who worries about his image to the public either. If he had followed his management companies’ plans or his acquaintances’ advices solely, he might not have had ‘Blood Boiling Youth’ on his resume. Lee Jong Suk is walking forward where his heart is pointing as he disregards the other’s concerns about him walking down the tough road instead of taking a shortcut. He is not affected by the popularity or an image. Looking at Lee Jong Suk smiling as he thinks about his life-curve of the future, Na Tae Joo’s poem, ‘Flowering plant’ that he read on ‘School 2013’ came to mind; Its pretty when looked closely It’s lovely when looked for long You are too Write.
