~ NEWS OF THE DAY ~ Classical Indian music and dance group Surbahar holds inaugural performance in Cambridge A new group which aims to promote classical Indian music and dance put on a breath-taking show to mark the groups inaugural performance in Cambridge. Members of Surbahar, which was established around six months ago, entertained around 100 guests with a mixture of musical and choreographed performances to celebrate the groups creation. Advertisement It is hoped the groups performance will be the first of many and it follows news of support from the Dover Lane Music Conference, one of Indias most famous musical conference events. Nandan Sengupta, who acts as a music advisor for Surbahar, said: There were about 100 people in the audience which was great turnout for us as it was our first programme. I think so many people turned up because they love classical Indian music and dance but cant get it here at the moment. Mr Sengupta added: The aim of Surbahar is to promote Indian classical music and dance in the UK – there are some similar groups already but none in East Anglia, which is why we started up this one. The programme from the performance was very good and lots of people said to us it was of a very high calibre. He explained the groups name Surbahar is a term which exists in Hindi, Punjubi and Sanskrit, with sur meaning tone or melody and bahar denoting beauty. The group, none of whose members are professional musicians or dancers, is now looking to hold further performances next year, with tentative dates including February and June.
