# NEWS: Yak Mela in Tawang -Tawang Times TAWANG, Nov. 25: Minister Tourism, Urban Development and Art & Culture etc. Pema Khandu while inaugurating the Yak Mela 2014 at Chhaghar Grazing Ground and Outdoor Stadium Jang, Tawang appealed to the scientists to find out the major problems in yak husbandry in consultation with the yak rearers and to give a cost effective solution for these problems . He appreciated the efforts of ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak for promoting and highlighting scientific yak husbandry practice. Yak Mela at Chagar GG organized by ICAR-National Research Center on Yak, Dirang in collaboration with 46 Infantry Brigade of Indian Army, Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Department, Tawang and Jang Sports Club. The 2nd edition of Yak Mela is being organized at Tawang for the first time. The Yak Mela mainly focuses to improve Yak husbandry and upliftment of socio-economic status of Yak rearers for a sustainable livelihood in the Himalayan region and to protect it from extinction. The 1st Yak Mela was held at Dirang in West Kameng last year. Dr. SM Deb, Director, ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak highlighted the objective of the Yak Mela that aims to promote scientific yak husbandry practices in Tawang. Dr. Deb assured all the nomadic herdsmen that ICAR-NRCY will go an extra mile for the sustainable development of yak husbandry as well as nomadic yak herds of the country. A livestock competition was organized at Chaghar Grazing field to encourage the yak rearing community in adoption of scientific yak husbandry practices. Over 1000 yak and yak cattle hybrids were gathered in this competition. Leki Dhondup of Marmong village was awarded for his best female yak, Phuntso Dorjee of Punglo village was also awarded for his best Dzomo (Yak-Cattle Hybrid-female) and Kesang Zonten of Mago village for his best yak bull. Exhibition stalls by the yak rearing community with their ethnic item and live demonstration of yak milk product preparation were main the attraction of the mela. Exhibition stall from yak rearing community of Jang was awarded the best exhibition stall. More than 2000 farmers including 300 yak rearers from different corners of Tawang districts attended the mela. ICAR-NRCY provided 100 yak rearers with basic amenities like tarpolin, rain coat, gum boot, mineral mixture, milking bucket, concentrate mixture, common salt, blanket, calcium preparation and solar emergency light. Nomadic yak herdsmen were registered for opening of bank account under the Pardhanmantri Jan Dhan Yojana and ADHAR card Bank Account with the help of State Bank of India, Jang Branch and district authority. KVK West Kameng and Tawang made an exhaustive demonstration of the useful technology pertaining to high altitude agriculture. Brigadier D.S. Saini, 46 Infantry Brigade, Indian Army and Abhisek Dev, Deputy Commissioner, Tawang were also present to encourage yak rearing community to adopt scientific intervention to make yak husbandry a profitable venture. The mela was organized in collaboration with 46 Infantry Brigade, Indian Army, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department, Tawang and Jang Sports Club. Pema was accompanied by Parl. Secy RWD Jambey Tashi, Parl. Secy. Hydropower Phurpa Tsering, MLA Tawang Tsering Tashi,Chairman DoKA Jambey Wangdi, ZPC Jambey Tsering, ADC Jang Dilip Chutia, ADC Tawang Tapasya Raghav, DCC President Nawang Sempa at the Yak Mela.
