This after the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) held a meeting and said they will promulgate a memorandum circular formalizing local TVs digital shift using the Japanese standard. At the meeting, television networks ABS-CBN, GMA, and TV5 did not oppose the choice to pick the Japanese digital TV standard. The result of the public hearing this morning is that nobody has registered [their] opposition to Section 2 of the proposed circular...[which] is the adoption of [the Japanese] ISDB-T Standard, NTC Director Edgardo Cabarrios said. The proposal was not met with opposition, even from GMA Network, which earlier said it wanted the European digital broadcast instead. After the promulgation of the directive, a new technical working group will be formed early December to draft its implementing rules and regulations (IRR), Cabarrios added. NTC wants to switch off analog TV signals in the country by December 2015, following countries around the world migrated to digital-only TV to improvise picture quality and even increase the number of channels. The hearing was held less than a month after President Aquino promised Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, its the Japanese version that the Philippines is adopting for the migration to digital TV.
