#NUTSHELL – JANUARY 27th — LAYING UP TREASURE – Luke 12:13-15: In her book, “Here Am I Lord-Send Somebody Else!” Jill Briscoe tells of a wealthy man who labored many years to build several beautiful homes in which he lived. The man accepted Christ on his deathbed. The man’s gardener was a faithful Christian who knew that his own life did not consist of the things that he possessed. In fact Luke 12:15 applied to his lifestyle, “Beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of things he possesses.” He saved and gave in abundance and spent as little as possible on himself. When both men arrived in heaven, the gardener was given a beautiful mansion with a marvelous view of the Sea of Glass. The rich man was offered a hut, clean and white but still a hut. Seeing his face fall, the Apostle Peter explained, “I’m sorry sir, but we did the best we could with the material you sent us!” Of course, none of us will be disappointed in heaven but the story does make an important point. Jesus told us to lay up for ourselves treasures in heaven and God has blessed us with our material stuff that we might be a blessing to others. Take a few minutes to thumb through the register of your checkbook or the printout of your expenses. What does your money say about you, are you “laying up treasures in heaven?” A preacher paid a visit to a farmer and asked, “If you had $200.00 would you give $100.00 to the Lord?” “Of course,” said the farmer. “If you had two cows would you give one cow to the Lord?” the preacher questioned. “Yes!” “What if you had two pigs, would you give one of them to the Lord?” The farmer replied, “That’s not fair, you know I have two pigs.”
