#NUTSHELL – JANUARY 2nd — NO MORE STATUS QUO – Romans 12:2-3: A few years ago I was doing some reading on the internet about Apple’s upcoming I-Phone and I thought to myself…”That’s a great concept, but will it really work and who is really going to use a phone with all of those capabilities?!?!?” The interesting, if not ironic part is that today possibly billions are using the technology.” We humans are an interesting species in how we perceive progress. We appreciate it, even value it once we realize its potential benefits. Our hesitation stems from a word that relentlessly accompanies progress ”change.” It makes us uneasy to consider that things could be different, even the possibility that they need to be. The sad fact is, until we personally experience the benefits of that change, we remain content to live day to day with the “status quo.’ Our spiritual life works much in the same way. Our heart tells us that things could and in fact need to be different, but we hesitate due to the prospect of change. We know that we need to progress spiritually, but instead, we continue in the status quo. All because we fear the cost those changes will bring. In fact, the original phrase for “status quo” is derived from a term form 14tth century. In Latin it was written “in statu quo res errant ante bellum,” which meant “in the state in which things were, before.” Every year begins as an effort to move forward to change to aid progress. As a Believer our spirit is constantly “at War” with our flesh and it cries for change, for dramatic and lasting changes, but still we are often unwilling to endure the cost. We can’t afford to live the same way. God asks us to take an honest inventory of who we are as Believers, and to see ourselves in the mirror of scripture, so that we can better reflect Him to a lost world. “…Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Be honest measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us” (Romans 12:2-3)
