#NationalComingOutDay - a teachable moment. I just found out that some of the younger gaylings and lesbianettes may not know why we celebrate National Coming Out day on October 11th? On October 11, 1987 over 400,000 of us marched on Washington DC to protest about government inaction on the thousands of gay men dying in the streets from AIDS/HIV. As a people, we were being brutalized by religious zealots, politicians and indifference. We had suffered at the hands of assailants committing hate crimes against us. Our families were not recognized. Our children were being seized. And our biggest enemy was THE CLOSET that prevented others from knowing that they loved someone gay or lesbian already. So as we laid the QUILT out on the National Mall to mourn our dead, created ACT UP (the AIDS coalition to Unleash Power) to jolt the bureaucracies into action - we also decided to create a day to DEMAND that we all come out and join our common struggle. Thank you to my dear friend and creator of this day the late Jean OLeary. She was a fierce advocate and I loved her deeply! So find your backbone and come out!
