(North Phoenix) Kava Kava plants - piper methysticum (Natural LEGAL insomnia/anxiety medication alternative!) Well tended organically grown Kava Kava root division in 3 gallon pot - 25$ per plant - no trades. Native to Hawaii and rarely seen in our city, this plant requires frequent watering and grows great in Phoenix partial shade at best. This picture of the one and a half year old mother plant is growing in a corner with east and north facing walls so gets a good amount of shade and daylight. This plant survived the last seasons of winter freezes when it was a quarter of this size with a blanket over it: Some studies into the effects of kava on the brain demonstrate that potentially, kava kava benefits people who suffer from social anxiety and stress by calming them in a way similar to benzodiazepine medications such as Valium. Another of the reported medicinal benefits of kava kava is as an analgesic, or painkiller, for which kava has also been traditionally used in the South Pacific. Indigenous islanders use kava to treat arthritis pain and to reduce overall chronic pain; to treat dysmenorrhea (menstrual discomfort); to relieve tension and pain in muscles; and even to treat asthma and urinary tract infections. These baby plants were divided from the mother this season. They come in a 3 gallon pot. I would recommend re potting them in a larger pot (they have big root stock) until after the last freeze this season, when they should be planted.
