Not only is this absurd tale of active inaction an insult to those who’ve built careers in an area of research that is becoming more and more important with each passing year, it’s an insult to all Canadians who pay those scientists and value their research. Here was an opportunity to take the lead on an issue of fundamental importance to the security and economic well-being of the country, shut down by a taxpayer-funded communications apparatus so unwieldy that borders on parody (nine layers?!). This kind of muzzling is nothing new, of course. Just over a year ago, hundreds of scientists gathered on Parliament Hill to demonstrate against the suppression of their work and in support of evidence-based decision making. This has to change. The documents show Canadian Ice Services scientists proposed holding briefings once or twice a year to keep Canadians apprised of what’s happening at the northern reaches of the country, an area Prime Minister Stephen Harper is touring right now. That sounds like an excellent idea. Let them speak. ...
