“Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, ‘If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple’” (Luke 14:25). This is what’s called “hyperbole”—contrasting love with hatred—for the sake of emphasis. Our love for God should be so great, that our love for our mother and father, spouse, children, siblings and our own life should seem like hatred, compared to the love we have for the God who gave us those loved ones and our own life.
