“Now then, listen, you lover of pleasure, lounging in your security and saying to yourself, ‘I am, and there is none besides me. I will never be a widow or suffer the loss of children.’ Both of these will overtake you in a moment, on a single day: loss of children and widowhood. They will come upon you in full measure, in spite of your many sorceries and all your potent spells. You have trusted in your wickedness and have said, ‘No one sees me.’ Your wisdom and knowledge mislead you when you say to yourself, ‘I am, and there is none besides me.’ Disaster will come upon you, and you will not know how to conjure it away. A calamity will fall upon you that you cannot ward off with a ransom; a catastrophe you cannot foresee will suddenly come upon you. Isaiah 47:8-11 (NIV) Babylon is rebuking Babylon because she begun trusting in her own abilities. She was trusting in her wickedness foolishly had forgotten the omniscience of God. Her attitude and behavior would surely bring God’s judgment upon her. There was no seeking of divination and the dark arts or the counsel of her wise men that could avert the calamity. Babylon being caught up in the pursuit of power and pleasure now believed in her own greatness believing to be the only power upon the earth. They would see their development come to fulfillment with their multitude of their sorceries and for their abundance of enchantments. Babylon became famous and as a founding place and breeding ground for occultic arts and practices. God is showing us how the proud sinner trusts in their own wickedness. They trust in their continuing wickedness to cover the tracks of their previous sin. They are using warped decision making in coming to their conclusions. As it did for Babylon, which seemingly conquered in one night, thinking they were safe and secure. People can have a sense false of security and be overtaken by their sinful behavior. Our security and safety is not in what we believe, but it is only in the Lord Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
