~OTHER BREAST CONDITIONS~ There are other conditions and noncancerous changes that can affect the breast. Some conditions can cause discomfort or pain with which treatment may help. Others need no treatment. Some conditions mimic breast cancer, but tests are needed to make a diagnosis. *Lobular Carcinoma in Situ (LCIS) When abnormal cells grow inside the lobules of the breast, but have not spread to nearby tissue or beyond, the condition is called lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS). The term in situ means in place. With LCIS, the abnormal cells are still in place inside the lobules. Although LCIS is not invasive cancer, it increases the risk of getting invasive breast cancer in either breast. LCIS has been considered a risk factor for breast cancer, but not a precursor (a condition that can develop into) to breast cancer. However, recent evidence shows some LCIS may develop into invasive lobular carcinoma (invasive breast cancer that begins in the lobules). *Benign Breast Conditions Benign breast conditions (also known as benign breast diseases) are noncancerous disorders that can affect the breast. These conditions can occur in both women and men. Your health care provider may use the term fibrocystic change to describe a range of benign breast conditions, however there are many benign breast conditions. The list below is not exhaustive, but some of the more common benign breast conditions include: •Hyperplasia •Cysts •Fibroadenomas •Intraductual papillomas •Sclerosing adenosis •Radial scars If you are diagnosed with a benign breast condition (or are told you have a fibrocystic change), it is important to find out which type you have.
