It produces the serotonin derivative melatonin, a hormone that affects the modulation of wake/sleep patterns and seasonal functions. Its shape resembles a tiny pine cone, hence its name, and it is located near the center of the brain. It is reddish-graay and about the size of a rice grain. The pineal gland is associated with the sixth chakra known as the ajna or third eye chakra. It is believed by some to be a dormant organ that can be awakened to enable telepathic communication.
