“OVERCOMING FEAR” I love the Book of Nehemiah and the incredible story of how some friends visited Nehemiah at his job in the King’s palace. These men had traveled a great distance to inform Nehemiah about the sad state of affairs in Jerusalem. They shared that the people were in trouble and there was great disgrace. The walls around the city had been torn down and portions were burning. As Nehemiah contemplated about this sorry report he turned to the Lord for guidance. His was employed as a cupbearer for the King, which was a very important job. Because he worked for the King and responsible for protecting him from a variety of things, a cupbearer could be killed if he even showed dissatisfaction or sorrow on his face. Nehemiah wanted to return to his homeland, but how he could convince the King to grant him permission to do so. The second chapter says, “I WAS VERY MUCH AFRAID, BUT I SAID TO THE KING…”. Nehemiah had spent time praying and fasting for this very moment. He wondered how he could share with the King and get his approval to return to his homeland. I believe it was because Nehemiah prayed so fervently which included fasting that the Lord actually changed the heart of an unbelieving King. Read chapters one and two of Nehemiah for yourself. Not only is a great inspirational and instructional reading, but it illustrates we be courageous and still be afraid. Nehemiah said, “I WAS VERY MUCH AFRAID!” He knew what he needed to do however and because he had sought the Lord’s direction, God opened the door for him to talk to the King. My point is this, you and I may be nervous, anxious or downright afraid to do something. If God is leading us however we cannot let fear control our actions. Being courageous doesn’t eliminate fear. Being courageous is doing what needs to be done even though we are afraid! Think of Nehemiah’s words, “I WAS VERY MUCH AFRAID…BUT!” He was afraid, but acted anyway. Don’t let fear keep you from doing something that needs to be done. Pray about it and get God’s direction. Once that is accomplished do it!! As you will see, once the King asked Nehemiah what was wrong, from that point on the conversation was very easy. The King even supplied him with protection on his journey along with materials to complete the rebuilding of the walls. God always goes above and beyond what we ask or expect. All He is waiting on is for us to take a step of faith. Pastor Carnes
