#OkoaMombasa If you love the rich history of the Kenyan coast, you will want to visit The Old Town of Mombasa. My father started his business enterprises in Old Town. He had a shop there called Githima Skins & Curios. (Haha! Still find the name funny to date!) Behind the main shop, dad had a little dingy office where he ran his Clearing and Forwarding business. Tourists frequented the shop to buy leather sandals, bags, carvings, small paintings and other mementos. I was in lower primary then, so my dad would pick me up at lunchtime and I would spend the afternoon with him there helping out till when my brothers got off from school at 4 pm. Next door to us was Mzee Swalehs Haluwa Shop. Wow...the display of the different types of haluwa would have me drooling. Sometimes Id go out back to watch him as he prepared them...a very long, delicate and tedious process, using only the best of ingredients, hence the reason it is quite costly. Earlier this year, Athman Amran and I took an evening walk in the Old Town streets and I took the picture below. It is still the same as I knew it, and very cool in the evenings. The business people there need our support. With all the bad publicity, it looks worse than it really is, and the hardworking business people there are losing out. Lets not kill this historical place...lets get down there and make some memories of our own. Theres a lot to see and do in Old Town.
