…..On May 5th, 1868, three years after the Civil War, John Logan, head of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization representing our Civil War veterans, established Decoration Day, or Memorial Day as we now know it, for the purpose of honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice during our Nations bloodiest conflict…….It was originally on May 30th, until recently………..We have many Civil War vets in our family and I will always be grateful for their service to our country, as well as all of our American veterans who served us through the years……Hats off!!……….. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Civil War Vets in our Family: Private Francis McKimmy, 6th West Virginia - Private Marion McKimmy, 15th West Virginia - Private Benjamin McKimmy, 6th West Virginia - Private Corp, Thomas N.
