• On Wednesday, a joint force of Second Field army troops, police and Central Security Forces have raided over 50 suspected extremist camps in Northern Sinai, arresting eleven suspects, including five Palestinians. Ten vehicles and 15 unlicensed motorbikes were also seized. Nine houses were also destroyed, as being the homes of extremists. The raid also saw fifteen Africans without identity cards, arrested, as they hid out in a house in Rafah. The government troops will continue their surge to rid the region of extremists, determined to rock the stability of Egypt. • The first televised hearing of the three British spy chiefs, the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) director Iain Lobban, Security Service (MI5) director-general Andrew Parker and Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) chief John Sawers, was broadcast on Thursday by the BBC. The hearing lasted for more than an hour-and-a-half, where they came under fire, following revelations by Snowden -- a former US National Security Agency systems analyst-turned-whistleblower -- that the United Kingdom was monitoring communications on a vast scale. The evidence gathering session also followed calls for the government to step up the oversight of the three intelligence agencies. Snowdens disclosures detailed Britains close cooperation with the NSA, embarrassing Prime Minister David Cameron and angering lawmakers in his ruling Conservative party, who had said the disclosures had harmed national security. • On Friday, Italian police arrested a 24 year old Somali man in connection with last month’s boat disaster off Lampedusa, when 366 African migrants died. He is being accused of belonging to an armed group responsible for organising the people trafficking, as most of the victims came from Eritrea and Somalia. Italian media say the Somali mans arrest followed investigations by Sicilian police and anti-Mafia police based in Rome. He is now being questioned in Sicily.
