"On reports that some incumbent barangay officials were seen bringing in large groups of applicants reportedly in exchange for money and food, Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said the officials are not committing any illegal acts by “assisting” their constituents."----- No extension of registration for barangay polls By Mayen Jaymalin (The Philippine Star) | Updated July 29, 2013 - 12:00am MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) yesterday ruled out the possibility of extending the registration of voters for the synchronized barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, which will be held on Oct. 28. Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said there is no reason for the poll body to extend the 10-day registration period for new and young voters. “No extension. Five o’clock in the afternoon of July 31 – that is the deadline,” Brillantes said. The Comelec estimates that about 700,000 potential voters will register for the barangay elections while another two million youths aged 15 to 17 will register for the SK polls. He said the ongoing registration has received positive response from potential voters, thus they see no need to extend it. On reports that some incumbent barangay officials were seen bringing in large groups of applicants reportedly in exchange for money and food, Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said the officials are not committing any illegal acts by “assisting” their constituents. If you want to help your constituents by bringing them to the registration centers, that is fine,” Jimenez said. But Jimenez stressed that barangay officials are restricted from meddling once the applicants are inside the election offices. “The rule of thumb is that barangay officials should not interfere in the registration process,” he said. philstar/headlines/2013/07/29/1025891/no-extension-registration-barangay-polls
