#OnThisDay in 1891, William Henry Stevenson was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin. As a young child, he and his parents moved to La Crosse where he spent his childhood. Stevenson attended Teachers College in La Crosse in 1912 and immediately began teaching in high schools in Holmen, Neillsville, and Madison. Stevenson went on to receive a law degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1920. After practicing law for a very short time, he was appointed circuit court commissioner and divorce counsel of Richland County in 1922 and served in this capacity until 1924. He also served as district attorney of Richland County from 1924 to 1926. After moving to La Crosse, he served as district attorney of La Crosse County from 1935-1941, and was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-seventh and to the three succeeding Congresses. Stevenson resided in Onalaska, Wisconsin until his death in La Crosse on March 19, 1978
