(One view of point by people who was for so called uprising !!! Interesting, regrating !!! ) The Failed State of Libya After the fall of the Gaddafi Regime, Libyans were euphoric with dreams of a democratic country that would abide by the rule of law and guarantee the rights of its citizens. On the 7th of July 2012, Libyans went to the polls to vote for a National Congress that would represent the country and facilitate the drafting of the constitution. The General National Congress instead became a battlefield between the two strongest parties which are The Justice and Building Party (Muslim Brotherhood) and The United National Party (Mahmoud Gabriel). The Libyan people were left to fend for themselves as the political parties fought it out on the political arena. In a bid to rid themselves of Mahmoud Gabriel, the Muslim Brotherhood adopt a controversial isolation law that was passed as rogue militias linked to the party surround government ministries, threaten government official and the public. In his last speech to the GNC, Dr Mohammed Magharyef, the former head of the GNC drops a bombshell by stating that members of the GNC who are also militia leaders threatened other members to pass laws and had control of the GNC. All of this took place while the security situation in the country spiraled out of control. The former Army Chief of Staff Mr Manghoush was a staunch supporter of the militias and provided them mainly the Libya Shield Militia with military hardware and financial support as the Libyan Army was ignored and even the soldiers’ monthly wages (which were much less than the militias) were left unpaid. The people of Libya have been demanding that the militias disband but the GNC had different plans to strengthen the militias in an attempt to rule the country by force. On a bloody Saturday on the 8th of July, the people of Benghazi had had enough of the militias and protestors stormed the head quarters of the Libyan Shield Militia group in Al-Kuwafiya Benghazi as they were met with a hail of bullets that killed over 40 protestors and injured many more. The Special Forces intervened and the base was overrun and put under the authority of the national army. On Friday the 14th of July, masked gunmen attack several Libyan Army bases in Benghazi and 6 members of the Special Forces are killed. Military intelligence reports assert that members of Ansar Al-Sharia (suspects in the American Embassy attack) and members of the Libya Shield Militia are behind the attack. The first response from the GNC is that all militias disband but then they retract their position and claim that the militias should play the role of the National Guard to continue their dominance and control on the country. The Grand Mufti an outspoken supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood and the militias speaks out one week later and mentions nothing about the killing of Army and police officials or the peoples’ demand of a full investigation of the massacre of protestors by the militias. Friday prayers were also used to spread the same message sent by the GNC and Grand Mufti. One particular sheik Busidra on the 14th July incited violence by defending the militias and claiming that the Libya Shield would dissolve into smaller groups and attack the army and civilians. The message was headed as that same night masked gunmen attacked the Libyan Army. In response to these events, offices of the belonging to the Justice and Assembly Party the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood were burned in several eastern cities. TV and radio stations belonging to the MB were also targeted and many have had to leave the city of Benghazi. According to Wikipedia, “The common characteristics of a failing state include a central government so weak or ineffective that it has little practical control over much of its territory; non-provision of public services; widespread corruption and criminality; refugees and involuntary movement of populations; and sharp economic decline.” Is this the democratic Libya the people voted for? What begs the question is why is Libya being left by the International Community to descend into chaos and why is there no pressure being put on the GNC for their support for ideological militias and radical fundamentalism?
