#OrwellianWednesday For this weeks selection, I was going to share something about Jonathan Swift. However, last week, somebody (I wont say who, just that their name sort of rhymes with Her sin den) said that that weeks Orwell essay made them feel hopeful. So, in the interest of balance I thought this week Id drag out the doom-and-gloom again with Toward European Unity. Here, he posits the only way to preserve the promises of freedom and equality, and avoid nuclear war and/or global totalitarianism, is for the nations of Western Europe to form into a United Socialist States. And now, almost sixty years later, I feel the need to ask: is Europe really the human races last hope for achieving equality and freedom?
