"Placenta accreta is defined as the abnormal adherence of the placenta to the wall of the uterus. Abnormally adherent placenta is traditionally divided into accreta for placentas implanted onto the myometrium without underlying decidua, increta for those invading myometrium, and percreta for those penetrating the entire uterine wall. (...) Abnormally adherent placentas are a major source of maternal morbidity and mortality, predominantly related to intrapartum hemorrhage, with risks, including massive transfusion; disseminated intravascular coagulation; infection; uterine rupture with potential fetal death; injury of adjacent organs, particularly genitourinary; formation of fistulas; and death. In addition, placenta accreta has been associated with small for gestational age infants and preterm deliveries." surgpath.theclinics/article/S1875-9181%2812%2900183-3/abstract
