~ Please only credit me by first name, thanks! I know some on your page will already know who I am and what store Im referring to. ~ Last week I was volunteering at a consignment store that was going out of business. The owner, a friend who works out of state, couldnt afford the airfare to come into town on short notice and help, so it was up to her friends and family, and we only had about a week until the store would be evicted. I helped consignors pick up their items, I hung items that had been stored in plastic bags or bins so their owners could identify them more easily, and I ran the cash register during the stores going out of business sale. Because we were all volunteers, we came into work whenever we could, and on this specific night last week, the other volunteers were running late, so I was the only one running the register. There was a big line with no less than 13 people patiently waiting... until a disgruntled consignor showed up and broke up in front of the line. She was rude to say the least, angrily demanding an explanation of why her consignment check hadnt been received, and insisting that I give her the store owners personal phone number, which I wasnt authorized to give out. When I explained that I didnt work there, I was just a volunteer trying to help, she continued to berate me personally in front of everyone there. I kept my cool, tried to sympathize with her frustration, and offered to get her information and give it to the owner to check into. She gave it to me while still literally yelling at me. She finally stomped off, I took a deep breath and apologized to everyone waiting in line, and proceeded to check out the next person waiting. The woman next in line asked if I was okay. I showed her my shaking hand and said, Well, not really. I understand why she was upset, but Im not getting paid here, am just trying to help, and I didnt expect to be treated like that. She said, When you apologized for the wait earlier, you said the other volunteers were running late...have you had anything to eat tonight? No, I replied, but added jokingly, Theres a pear in the fridge waiting for me if I ever get a break! She smiled, thanked me, took her bag and left. I went on to the next customer. Within five minutes, my new-found friend was back -- with a hot Little Caesars pizza! She handed it to me, smiled, and said, This is for you. You need to eat something. I hope your night gets better! She turned around to leave and I called out a thank-you to her, she paused at the door, smiled and waved, and was gone into the night. I didnt get a chance to enjoy my pizza until backup finally arrived, but I have to tell you, that was the best pizza ever...because of the RAOK of a complete stranger. I didnt get her name, but if you read this -- you know who you are -- I want to thank you once again for the unexpected and truly generous gift you gave me that night. There are good people in this world, and youre one of them. God bless you. Thanks again. Becky #GeauxBeKind
