☛ Police Bureau Offers Tips To Prevent Smartphone Theft ☚ In 2013, Portland Police officers took 274 reports of cellular phones being stolen, most of them smartphones like the iPhone and Android. Many of these cases were the result of unsuspecting community members using their phones in public places where thieves would ask to borrow the phone then run away or would quickly run up and grab the phone then run away. The Police Bureau would like to remind community members of a few simple things that can help smartphone users protect themselves: 1. When in public, pay attention to your surroundings. Thieves look for easy opportunities to steal phones. 2. Password-protect your information and use a screen lock. 3. Enable Find My iPhone or similar apps to help locate and erase your data, if needed. 4. Back up all your personal information regularly. If your smartphone is stolen, police ask you to do four things: 1. Report it to police and your cellular provider. 2. Remote locate your phone. 3. Remote lock your phone. 4. Remote erase your phone.
