#PoliticalMath: APC politics in Benue looks like a pile of broken glass Posted on July 24, 2013 by Staff Writer in Party Politics with 0 Comments With less than 24 hours to the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress in Benue, there are indications that the still unregistered party is already breaking into factions. As if to underscore the extent of the growing impasse, the would-be leaders of the party some of whom were present at the inauguration of the merger process last Wednesday are not speaking to the press. The cracks have been emerging for some time now. Some notable faces in the opposition parties in the state stayed away from Wednesday’s programme, the most noticeable being former governor, Senator George Akume. Akume is the state leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria. In addition, none of the members of the opposition representing the state in the National Assembly; Oker Jev, (Buruku); John Idyeh, (Gboko/Tarka) and Benjamin Aboho (Kwande/Ushongo) attended the inauguration. Media reports quoting sources, say the group intentionally refused to invite Akume, and are hell bent on hijacking the APC leadership in the state. These groups within the party are fed up with Akume’s modus operandi, which includes the unilateral imposition of candidates. Akume is not exactly lying low by the way. His political machinery is riled up with the goal of discrediting the outcome of Wednesday’s meeting. Will this turn out to be another political soap opera? We will keep our eyes on this one.
