“Present your case,” says the LORD. “Set forth your arguments,” says Jacob’s King. “Tell us, you idols, what is going to happen. Tell us what the former things were, so that we may consider them and know their final outcome. Or declare to us the things to come, tell us what the future holds, so we may know that you are gods. Do something, whether good or bad, so that we will be dismayed and filled with fear. But you are less than nothing and your works are utterly worthless; whoever chooses you is detestable. Isaiah 41:21-24 (NIV) The prophet mentions the use of prophecy as evidence that the Lord, knowing and declaring the end from the beginning, has ample power to bring His purpose to fulfillment. The vanity of idols is again revealed. When you read or hear a prophecy how do you react to it? Some people get all excited for the prophecy – without thinking who the prophet is or even if the prophecy was meant for them. Some people prophecy to impress. They have a message for whoever they come in contact whether God has given them the message or not. We are to verify the message with the Word of God. Israel knew the messenger was from God and that the word he prophesied occurred or would occur. Know who the messenger serves – God or some other form of god. Israel was surrounded by many nations whose gods supposedly had special powers, such as raising crops and providing victories in war. These gods however failed to deliver. A god with limited power at all is not really a god. When we are tempted to put our trust in something other than the living God – money, career, family, or even military power-we should stop and ask some serious questions. Will it come through? Will it unfailingly provide what I am looking for? God delivers. When He makes a promise, He keeps it. He is the only completely trustworthy God.
