[Psalm 72] can lead people of our times to hold up their rulers in prayer, that they may be mediators of divine goodness; that all their policies and decisions may flow from the great eternal justice, to defend the defenceless and to crush oppression; and to know that this is the path to the health and harmony of earth and all that lives in her. Following from the insights of the collectors of the psalms and other Jewish interpreters, such as the Targum, the church has gained through the soaring poetry of the psalm a messianic vision. She has related it all to Jesus, Messiah and mediator of God’s reign, and prayed that his work for the helpless and for the restoration of the world of goodness and peace may come to full fruition. And there is also an application of this prayer to each disciple, for each one in Christ becomes a channel of the divine compassion and justice in their own realm of influence, and each comes down there like rain to the crops and helps restore earth’s peace. To the benediction [closing it], the people of the church then also say ‘Amen and Amen’. For they give thanks that in answer to all the prayers of this book of psalms there has been given the vision of the Messiah and [realm] of the [Sovereign God], where the poor find true life, the wild creatures come to their Saviour, and earth has her springing of God’s peace and goodness. --John Eaton, The Psalms: A Historical and Spiritual Commentary
