!Pura Vida! Seventeen years ago I wrote my “Philosophy of Education” and it ends with the following line, “I am a man with a dream, a dream of impacts and changes for which I play a small part in the successful lives of my students.” Who knew that my being hired in St. Francis a year after this was written, too many to count conversations with the guidance counselor, Judy Savick, and the eventual volunteering as a web developer with the Tirimbina Rainforest Center and Joan Spector would lead to fourteen years of having the privilege of taking part in that dream. A dream that, for some, is an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience. As the program has evolved (and I think it is fair to say it has); there has been that one longing constant – a desire to provide an experience for students that will impact their lives not only today but years from now. It is with great joy to read statements shared from former students and parents (alumni of past experiences) to the impact and memories held for some, whether it was last year or fourteen years later. As we close in on our fourteenth departure; it is again my desire for my students and chaperones (parents) to take in all that Costa Rica has to offer (leave no regrets) and that their experiences too will be ones that are replayed as having an impact on their life. “I am a man with a dream and may this experience continue to play a small part in the lives of my students (past, present, and future).” !Pura Vida!
