***RANT ALERT**** the fact there are people on my Facebook right now who dont understand why the Subban comment in the Vancouver Sun has blown up has me really scratching my head.... If you GENUINELY dont understand why people are upset, ask yourself: Do hockey players typically get referred to by skin colour? Where white people are the minority, are they referred to by their skin pigment in sports reporting (i.e. Basketball)? I would think it goes without saying, but have we forgotten that black people have, and, in many ways still are marginalized (the disproportionate representation of black ppl in American jails is pretty telling of this). This poor choice of wording comes on the heals of the Boston vs Montreal twitter incident involving his older brother. And, even if it WERE politically, and socially okay to reference people by heir skin colour, its pretty freakin obvious in a sport that is predominantly played by ppl of euro decent, that the guy with PKs last name is the guy who isnt as pale as the others. In other words? Its incredibly offensive to the general publics sensibilities that someone can refer to another by the colour of their skin in professional sports reporting and others cant seem to figure out why it isnt okay. RANT OVER.
