[READ CAREFULLY] Lets hear out about our idol, from someone who knows him. --SEWEEKLY EDITORS THOUGHT OF LUHAN-- Before interviewing Luhan, I was no longer a stranger to this new generation’s idol. Since he returned to China after his debut in Korea, every step he takes generates extensive discussion on new media platforms. But his popularity comes before his projects, this was something that puzzled me and motivated me to find out the reason. When i was doing an interview, I messaged Mi Meng, initially I thought she would be too occupied with her business to notice changes in the idol market, but as soon as I mentioned Luhan, she started talking nonstop. Similar situations occurred while I was gathering information (about Luhan), and this was shocking to me - an idol whom I thought was for young people only, had gradually seeped into my circle of friends. Therefore, when communicating with Luhan’s team, I told them that rather than a simple interview, I wanted an opportunity to really observe this “mysterious” young man. In order to add more perspective to the interview, I even brought along my 90-line colleague. After several days of observing and interviewing him, as well as chatting with his good friend “Lao Gao”, I think I am starting to understand why Luhan is so special. He is of course a pure and cool pretty boy, the object of young girls’ affection. In the movie “Back to 20”, director Chen ZhengDao showed this in several shots, it is very rare to see someone with such an overflowing feeling of purity and youth in domestic films. However, what left me the strongest impression was the innocence and focus he unknowingly exhibits. His innocence lies with the fact that he is completely unfamiliar with the established unwritten rules. For example, there was a lot of food in the waiting room prepared for him by his commercial sponsor, when he walked in, he immediately looked at me as I was chatting with his team, and asked a little shyly, “can I eat the food on the table?” When I talked about a recent soccer game with him, he excitedly expressed his desire to play more, and although I was joking that he should just go play in the Chinese Super League, he actually seriously considered this possibility, and said that it would be nice to play a game for Beijing Guoan FC. I laughed that he didn’t choose the champion team, Guangzhou Evergrande FC, and he continued to explain seriously that he’s a Beijing person, so he has to support Guoan FC…he doesn’t have the reservations and awareness typical of idol stars at all. He isn’t an expert who can give interviews with ease, he doesn’t know to throw out popular internet phrases for good headlines, but what’s rare and precious is that his team didn’t prepare answers for him to protect his image, but rather respected his sincerity to honestly say whatever was on his mind. I especially remember his preoccupation with the rookie actor award, in particular when I introduced to him the team’s history of not managing anyone other than top award-winning actors and actresses, his first reaction was to ask “did they all get the rookie award before?” He’s not envious of others, and does not overreach for what is currently beyond his grasp. Later when I heard Luhan describe the way his parents raised him and his reason for studying overseas, I could feel his focused spirit from being brought up in a good family. The many added benefits of being a “celebrity” are not important to him. My 90-line colleague wrote about her observations of Luhan in the reporter’s log. She said, Luhan hasn’t become like the majority of the people in this industry, when he talks his face is innocent and defenseless. From what I see, although Luhan is already an idol at the center of people’s attention, he isn’t dazzled by the glamour of the spotlight, and this is something that deeply moved me. I’ve seen too many celebrities and their friends, but when I saw Luhan and his childhood friend Lao Gao and the way they interact, it was as if they were still in school - the two haven’t changed at all because of their different paths in life. I thought, Luhan and Lao Gao are really models of this generation’s young people; they are professional and polite, they are not obsessed with unwritten rules nor do they depend on those rules. They won’t casually surrender to the already established world, they have confidence in themselves, and want to achieve their goals through honest effort - this is why they are able to hold on to this free-spirited side even today.
