[Ramadan FAQs] Making up the missed days of 2 Ramadans – Fast and pay or fast only? The one who delays making up their days from the previous Ramadan without a valid reason beyond the following Ramadan is sinful. There is a scholarly opinion that states that such persons must feed a poor person for each missed day in addition to making up the days. However, it seems that the correct opinion is that a person does not have to do anything more than make up the missed fasts. This is because Allah only mentioned making up days (Quran, 2: 184). Feeding a poor person goes against the apparent meaning of the Quran, because Allah only enjoined making up the days and He did not mention more than that. As for what has been narrated from some of the companions about also feeding a poor person, this may be interpreted as referring to what is mustahab (preferable) and not waajib (obligatory).
