#Readerspost The Mysterious Light- She was trembling, lying partially unconscious on her decadent bed. And was trying her best to remember the holy lines of the Hanuman Chalisha, but alas! She was unable to utter a single word. Out of fear she was sweating heavily. In the mild blue light of bed lamp she again gathered all her courage to look at it again. The mystifying green light flashed once more and disappeared within blink of an eye. It was a dark cold night of mid-monsoon. Outside her half open glass windows it was raining cats and dogs. The spark of lightning, roar of thunder and the cold damp breeze were making the night terrifying. The howling of dogs and the hellacious noise by the frogs was adding extra elements of fear to that. Suddenly she woke up after a dreadful nightmare. But soon she realised it was no more than an awful dream and tried to get asleep. However that night was not intended to bless her peaceful sleep. Her drowsy eyes caught sight of a gloomy green light coming from her cupboards. And that’s it. She tried to remember, was that some kind of torch or mobile. No, it can’t, she had only books in her upper cupboard, nothing else. And within seconds it vanished, only to comeback after sometime. This made her panic-stricken. Her parents were out of town. She was left alone only to face such scared situation. At first she enjoyed the day of home-alone. But this horrible night and that mysterious light made her regret about her decision of staying alone. With each forward step of the steady clock, the most horrifying stories she ever heard came to triumph over her mind. She thought of her granny, who used to tell them scary ghost stories of the lost world. In villages they say ladies; who died while pregnant, became Dahani or Dayans and nurture their children at the graveyard with green flamed fire. They call it the light of Dahani. ‘Can it be a Dayan in my bedroom?’ she thought. If only it was a friendly gossip, she along with all her friends would miss no chance of making fun of all these rubbish. But now it was she, whom her imaginary ghosts were making fun of. She anyhow grabbed her mobile and thought of calling Lucy or Rima, her best friends. But at this time of night, when the clock was showing 2:30, was not fair enough to disturb them. Moreover, when she thought how they would react, she preferred to be silent. And soon another thing came to her mind. It was raining heavily, what if some wild animal has entered her room through the half-open window? She recalled many situations where poisonous snakes were found from their house; last year a cobra was detected in that very room, only two feet away from her bed. An hour passed liked that and rain stopped. Everything was as usual, except that blinking light. She finally decided to face it. She lighted her mobile torch, stepped carefully from the bed and headed towards the switch board. BHUT PISACH NIKAT NAHI AWAWE, MAHAVIR JAB NAAM SUNAWE... she continued to recite her favourite line of the Hanuman Chalisha. The tube light took a little while to light up the room. In between she noticed the green light moving, like flying in the air. In a fully bright room, she ran eagerly towards the dressing table only to discover a light worm. ‘So you are the villain of my story’ she shouted. Lifted it up and examine like a C.I.D. officer but could not decide, should she laugh or cry? -by Sutikshna Mohapatra
