"Redefining HR in the minds of the employees." The economy changed from agriculture to industry with industrial revolution. With this came into existence a department which looked into worker wages, welfare and related issues. This led to the rise of personnel management. An important event in the industrial revolution was the emergence of the labor union. Personnel management department now had to deal with labor issues at one end and management at the other and thus emerged industrial relations department. It had to be capable of doing politics and diplomacy. Human Resource Management saw a major revolution after 1850 as a result of various principles and studies. Human Resource Management became increasingly line management function. It was linked with various business operation. It looked into recruitment, selection, training, development, motivation etc. With increase in technology and knowledge base industry Human Resource Management has assumed more critical role today. Major task of Human Resource Management today is aligning individual goals and objective with the business goals and objectives. Human Resource Management focuses on action that differentiates the organization from its competitors. Human Resource staff was looked as a department which only did the administrative work mostly this work was executive centric and reactive. It hindered the employee¡¦s performance with complex layers of bureaucracy. Today Human Resource department is at the center of organization¡¦s web of employees. Human Resource has a strong influence on the business as follows: • Supports the business: Human Resource supports the business by employee management and planning teams. These teams later adapt to the changing requirement of the organization. Human Resource work closely with human capital and ensures that organisation has right people for right jobs. • Employee Engagement: Human Resource department is no longer seen as employees resort for complains and grievances. In fact, modern Human Resource Department includes active engagement, championing, staff members in work place, listening to concerns and building a partnership between employees, managers and human resource. It not only checks if employee is satisfied but it also makes sure that employee is fully involved in an enthusiastic manner about their work and thus will act in a way that furthers their organization¡¦s interest. It makes sure that employee is positively attached to his job and is willing to learn and perform at work. • Change Management: Organization that undergoes continuous change is argued to have ability to change rapidly, proactively and continuously. Change Management is the process by which Human Resource Department makes sure that employees have necessary skills and information when a process of their work changes. Human Resource plays a key role that ensuring change is carried out according to the plan because of its position as the centre employee relations. Human Resource Department is crucial to business and corporate strategy but is despised due to some negative perception from employees and other departments within the organization. It starts with an annoyance and reaches to unease. Human Resource staff feels to put a friendly face on all interactions, empathizing and finding common ground with employee concerns. However, they do not work with the employees on a regular basis so they are empathetic strangers. It rings false and no bond can be established on this basis. Why is there so much negativity towards Human Resource Department? The employee is a conscious customer who knows what he wants and has clear goals. He is not bothered of what company has to offer in general he is interested in what he has been offered. Therefore, it is very important for the Human Resource leader to manage their employer employee relations by aligning this perception aspiration and reality. Some of the researches conducted before have shown that Human Resource Management can add value to the organization when they are satisfied with the Human Resource practices. Again these are only perceptions and they need to be changed. Effective policies should be designed in order to make sure that employees do not have any of this negative perception regarding the organization or the Human Resource department. Research has shown that innovative behavior of employees is directly related employee satisfaction with Human Resource practices. Satisfaction with Human Resource practices plays a key role in influencing employee attitude and behavior. Some of the suggestions that we have for Human Resource department which they should constantly keep in mind are as follows: • Quick TAT for the request: Once any request comes to your mail box you have to quickly give a solution using your available resources. The Turn around Time has to be reduced in order to achieve employee delight. • Results for the request: Human Resource should first understand the problem come up with different solutions and present the best solutions to the employees and also explain the pros and cons of it. Human Resource people should be organizational facilitators. • Human Resource people should have understanding of operational functions: It is perceived that Human Resource people do not have any knowledge about core business. It is very important for them to know what business is doing and why? Hence Human Resource people should be confident, efficient and knowledgeable. • Should communicate vision, mission and objectives: The Human Resource Department along with the business manager should communicate the mission, vision and objectives of the company to the employees so that they can align their goals with the organizational goals. • Should have strategies: Human Resource Department should have strategies in place and they should be supported with key performance indicators and target. Alignment of these strategies is critical to the success of Human Resource efforts. ¡§The workplace is one place that can become a vault of different stories that involve both the employers and employees. An employer thinks of profit, while an employee considers his wages. But though they may seem to have different views, cooperation is still the main thing that can bring any organization to success.
