Registration is still open for the 23rd Annual Honolulu AIDS Walk, to be held on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the Honolulu Hale Civic Grounds. The event begins at 8 am for walker check-in and pre-walk warm up with Street Jamz Werkout. The walk starts at 9 am under the Red Ribbon Balloon arch in front of the Frank Fasi Municipal Building. Walkers can register as individuals or as a team with their friends, family and co-workers online at honoluluaidswalk.org. There is no cost to register. The Honolulu AIDS Walk is a benefit for Life Foundation, a local organization that provides free HIV testing and services for people living with HIV/AIDS on Oahu. It is estimated that 3,000 people in Hawaii are living with HIV or AIDS. Approximately 40,000 new HIV infections occur each year in the United States - half of these among individuals under the age of 25. Last year, the Honolulu AIDS Walk attracted nearly 4,000 participants and raised nearly $220,000 for Life Foundation. Life Foundation is expecting an even greater turn out this year than before since it is celebrating its 30th year as an HIV/AIDS service agency -with an expectation of 5,000 walkers and a goal to raise $250,000. The Honolulu AIDS Walk is an easy 3k (1.8 mile) walk around the historic Honolulu Hale Civic Grounds. Mai Tai Rumble winner IZIK will entertain walkers under Sky Gate, there will be team costume contest, prize give-aways, a kid zone with inflatable bouncers provided by Jump 4 Joy Rentals, and food booths by Soul De Cuba Café, Imua Lounge, Kona Shave Ice, Starbucks, and Paletas Hawaii. Those who raise $100 or more will receive a free commemorative Honolulu AIDS Walk t-shirt. High school team members need to only raise $75 to receive their prize t-shirt. Walkers who raise $1,000 get access to the VIP Walker Tent which includes free food. To ease the commute to the AIDS Walk and parking issues around the civic grounds, Life Foundation encouraging carpooling and use of TheBus, where the walkers can access the Alapai Terminal directly across from the start line. Ample parking is available in the city and county municipal parking lots on the Honolulu Hale Civic Grounds, please enter through the Alapai and Beretania entrances.
