“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: He is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.” Zechariah 9:9 This verse is the main prophecy that was fulfilled when Jesus made His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. This was Jesus’ public offering of Himself as the King or Israel. The official reaction of the Jewish authorities would take place two days later as the council would meet and decide to put Jesus to death. There was a huge crowd that greeted Jesus. The reason they chose this time to greet Jesus in this manner is due to the manner in which Jesus entered the city. Jesus chose to ride into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. The people knew the prophecy that King Messiah would enter thus, because of the above prophecy. This prophecy expressed several truths about the Messiah King. First, God says that He would be just. That means that He would never break the law and would rule righteously. But beyond that is the idea that He would be perfectly righteous. He would be sinless. Second, He would have salvation. This is, actually, closely related to the fact that He would be perfectly righteous. He would have to be righteous to pay for our sin, and He would have to pay for our sin to save us. The reason for this is death is what sin does. God warned man that if he sinned he would die. Sure enough, man sinned, and so he died. In fact, because of man’s sin, the whole universe became sentenced to death by man’s sin, and since sin caused the eventual death and destruction of all things, God made the statement, “The wages of sin is death.” So for Messiah to save us, He would have to do something to stem the tide of death caused by the consequences of sin sweeping over all of creation. To stop this destruction, Messiah would take the sin with which man had corrupted creation onto Himself. Then He would die and destroy it. That is what the King would come to do. He would come to get control of the destruction that is ravaging the universe, and be its King. Jesus is the Messiah King. We are His subjects. In view of what He has done, and who He is, we ought to believe in the person and work as the complete provision for our salvation, and then, out of appreciation and duty, serve Him as our King.
