(Repost) . We on the union side have completed our side of the issue but it remains for the government to act appropriately . The health workers are the ones that are worried the more about the protracted nature of this industrial action There is every indication that the over two-month old strike embarked upon by the health workers under the aegis of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) would soon be suspended. This is even as the health workers have decided that if the government can address issues that border on court judgements, they are ready to go back to work while the other demands will await further negotiation. This, according to the group, is to alleviate the sufferings of poor Nigerians, who cannot afford to pay exorbitant bills to access health care service at the private hospitals. The President, National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, who is also the Secretary of JOHESU, Abdulrafiu Adeniji, disclosed this in an exclusive interview in Abuja. According to him, “The health workers are the ones that are worried the more about the protracted nature of this industrial action, but we cannot be blamed for this because we have taken enough patience even before the commencement of the action. “We are being touched. We only want Nigerians to see it as the only pain that will eventually lead to the revival of the health sector in Nigeria.” On the demands, which, if urgently addressed his group will consider going back to work, Adeniji said: “Issues that border on law like court judgments, about five of them, and the agreement that has been signed in the adjustment of salary. If these ones are taken into consideration, then all other issues can follow. “We want to appeal to Nigerians not to see the strike as an issue of salary. It has to do with how we administer health services in the country to give us the best. “If the hospitals are well equipped and if the policies and the administration in the hospitals are comfortable and progressive and if the people working in the hospitals are happy, then on coming to the hospital, the people will reap the benefits. “JOHESU and members of the health sector are coming to the rescue because you cannot see better than we that are inside.” On the effort by JOHESU to get the strike suspended, he explained: “For now, we on the union side have completed our side of the issue but it remains for the government to act appropriately.” By Hassan Zaggi
