………………Rural Women Are Also Peace Builders……...... Heal Zimbabwe Trust joins the rest of the world in a belated commemoration of the International Day of Rural Women celebrated each year on the 15th of October. This day has been celebrated by the world since 2008 after realising the role that rural women play in the political and socio-economic development of their communities. In advancing this cause, Heal Zimbabwe prides itself in working with women in rural areas who have often been direct and indirect victims of political violence. HZT has worked with rural women in areas such as Chiweshe, Gutu, Zaka, Muzarabani and Gokwe where they have championed reconciliation, peace building work and dialogue through various activities such as conflict mediation, community capacity building projects in the form of small scale Income Generating Projects, road repair projects, clean up campaigns as well as neutral peace and development platforms such as Nhimbes. Since, Section 80 of the Zimbabwean Constitution provides for the rights of women by clearly stating that; “…every woman has full and equal dignity of the person with men and this includes equal opportunities in political, economic and social activities…”., HZT therefore calls for the Gender Commission to act towards the all-inclusive empowerment of the rural woman since they have a role to play in eradicating poverty as well as adhering to the ideals of peace and reconciliation. Heal Zimbabwe calls for the Government to advance the concerns of women in rural areas by ensuring that they participate actively in political and socio-economic activities that will empower and transform their communities thereby bringing changes required for sustainable development.
