“Rylisms devotional.” This Volume is the Word of God ”The tablets were the work of God; the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.” (Exo_32:16) Several years ago we purchased one of those huge Family Bibles, bound with engraved leather and filled with tons of extracurricular stuff like maps and charts and assorted Bible studies. There were also places for you to put your family’s pedigree — dad and mom, grandpa and grandma, uncles and aunts, etc. It was a centerpiece purchase, placed in high visibility on our coffee table. Truthfully, that was about the only place it could go. There was no way in the world you could carry it around with you, unless you had a pet Yak. The thing measured 14x10 and was at least four inches thick. Apart from the obvious blessing received from reading the Word, there is one piece of literature found in that old Bible that I have always cherished in particular . It succinctly sums up the fulness of the Bible’s power and authority in the lives and affairs of mankind. Here is what it said: This Book contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and it decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword, and the Christian’s charter. Here Paradise is restored, Heaven opened, and the Gates of Hell disclosed. Christ is its Grand Subject, our good its design, and the Glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently, and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. It is given you in life, will be opened at the judgement, and be remembered forever. It involves the highest responsibility, rewards the greatest labor, and condemns all who trifle with its holy contents. This volume is the Word of GOD.
