(S5H3) Islamic Movement In Nigeria NHRC Visits Al-Mizan Editorial Team The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has visited the editorial team of Al-Mizan newspaper in Kaduna, as a follow-up to the case of the illegal abduction of two staff of the newspaper in the past and the continued manhunt of the Editor-in-Chief by the State Service (SSS). During the meeting, Chairman of the NHRC, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, said the commission was much concerned with the harassment of staff of Al-Mizan newspaper and the continued manhunt of its Editor-in-Chief by security operatives and is willing to follow the case to the end. According to him, as citizens with equal rights and opportunity, the victims deserve to operate peacefully without any harassment from any quarters. Professor Odinkalu said, the commission is not out to indict the Nigerian security operatives, but make it shine and acquire the due public respect it deserved. “We are aware that the Nigerian security operatives are doing a very difficult job of protecting lives and property. They need to be assisted in whatever way possible for the good of all. But that does not mean that we should keep silent on excesses, as long as the citizens operate within constitutional terrain.” He commended management and staff of the I.M. Publication for its peaceful conduct and urge it not to relent in operating within constitutional provision. He promised to ensure justice is done to the two Al-Mizan reporters and their families, and that none of the newspaper’s staff will further be harassed or hunted by the SSS. It would be recalled that the NHRC facilitated the release of Editor of Al-Mizan newspaper, Musa Muhammad Awwal and reporter, Aliyu Saleh when security operatives abducted them in 2012.
