. SCAM ALERT Just read about the latest way scammers have figured out to take money from unsuspecting victims. It is described as the “one-ring cell phone scam” and it works like this: A computer program originating outside the U.S. will dial unsuspecting American cell phone customers and will let the phone ring exactly one time before hanging up. This is usually enough time for the call to show up as a missed call, but typically not enough time for a user to actually answer the call before it is disconnected. The missed calls appear to have the “area” codes of 268, 284, 473, 809, and 876 to name a few, but these “area” codes are in fact international “country” codes that include Antigua, Barbuda, Grenada, Dominican Republic and Jamaica. When the unsuspecting victim tries to return the “missed call”, they are automatically billed $19.95 for an international call fee, and are connected to a phone talk service and are charged $9.99 per minute for each minute that they stay connected. People work too hard for their money to lose it in a phone scam. You may want to contact your cell-service-provider and see if they will add restrictions to your account that will prevent third party billing. Best advice ….do not call back a missed call from a number you dont recognize from out-of-state especially if they did not leave a voice mail for you identifying themselves and the purpose of their call.
