***SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT*** In an effort to reward our fast local athletes for running with us, we are adding a VERY modest cash purse this season. It will be awarded to our FLORIDA HALFATHON SERIES CHAMPIONS, same for M/F, as follows: 1st - $1,000 2nd - $800 3rd - $600 4th - $400 5th - $200 TOTAL - $3,000 per gender; $6,000 total. Checks will be distributed after our last race on March 22. Our upcoming schedule: October 26: 6th Annual Florida Halloween Halfathon & 5K Race Ft. De Soto Park, at the mouth of Tampa Bay December 14: 13th Annual Florida Holiday Halfathon Madeira Beach to Largo January 18: 16th Annual Clearwater Distance Classic: 50K Ultra, Marathon, Halfathon, 5-Miler, 5K Walkathon Downtown Clearwater March 22: 6th Annual Florida Beach Halfathon & 5K Race Ft. De Soto Park, at the mouth of Tampa Bay Series Champions will be determined by adding finish times from the fastest of 3 halfathon segments but must include the final halfathon at Ft. De Soto. We hope to have several runners in close contention at the end of our season and believe a champion and final rankings should be determined in head-to-head competition on the final day. In terms of halfathon segments - runners could use one or both half marathon segments while completing our Clearwater Marathon. We realize marathon pace is typically slower than half marathon pace, but this makes it more inclusive for those athletes who will be running our marathon, but will miss other races. A fast athlete could earn a top ranking by running just two events: our Clearwater Marathon (two segments) and the Florida Beaches Halfathon. An athlete who completes 2 of our first 3 halfathons AND the final on March 22 will earn a ranking. Athletes who complete all 4 of our halfathons will have their slowest time of the first 3 automatically dropped. It is our goal to bring together and reward our fastest local athletes. While the cash purse will be available to anyone who earns their share, this format favors local athletes due to the minimal travel for those who live close by. That said, if a fast athlete from outside the area wants to join us for multiple events and has the means to travel here, we will certainly welcome them. Moving forward, we plan to increase the cash purse as our races continue to grow, but instead of simply increasing the amounts listed above for the top 5, we will increase the number of athletes who share in the cash purse. This is another goal we dreamed of when we started with road races 15 years ago, though it is not entirely new for us. Back in the day, I personally handed out more than $1,100,000 during my days as a Jet Ski race director. At our peak, I signed checks for $110,000 over a 5-week period, after 5 races all over the state of Florida. Though our websites have NOT been updated to reflect this new program, there is plenty of general info about our races at: FloridaRoadRaces Many thanks to all our athletes for all your support. It is only with your continued participation that we are able to offer this extra incentive to our local elite athletes.
