=SUNDAY EVENING UPDATE: WEAK LOW TO BRING SNOW AND RAIN TO SOUTHERN AND SOUTHEASTERN NEWFOUNDLAND MONDAY AFTERNOON THRU TUESDAY MORNING= Good Sunday evening, folks. I wanted to get this out sooner, but its been a busy day and Im just now having the chance to sit down and digest some weather data. A weak area of low pressure will pass over the Avalon Peninsula Monday night. Out ahead of it, snow will spread into much of southern and southeastern Newfoundland Monday afternoon or early Monday evening. Snow will start on the Burin Peninsula and south coast by noon, and in St. Johns/Northern Avalon around 2 PM. The snow will become moderate at times shortly after it gets underway. There will also be a period for the West Coast (not just squalls) Monday afternoon and evening. As the low moves closer, warmer air will push onto the Avalon and Burin Peninsulas Monday evening and Monday night. Temperatures will rise from a few degrees below freezing, to the freezing point or a few degrees higher. This will cause most of those two areas to see the snow mix with or change to rain for a time, before it changing back to snow after midnight Monday night. There will then be another period of moderate to heavy snowfall before the snow pushes offshore by mid-morning Tuesday. Temperatures by daybreak Tuesday will be back below freezing, which could make the morning commute rather tricky. Temperatures will fall throughout the day as the low departs. =SNOWFALL/RAINFALL AMOUNTS= Snowfall amounts do not appear to be anywhere close to the major category, but some areas will certainly see some significant and much needed accumulation. Here are my current thoughts on amounts and precipitation types: • St. Johns: 5-10 cm snow / Up to 5 mm of rain Monday night. Possibly up to 15 cm of snow if it the rain/snow doesnt make it into the Metro. • Southeast Avalon: 5-10 cm snow / 5-10 mm of rain. Higher rain amounts the farther south one goes. • Southwest Avalon: 10-15 cm snow / 5-10 mm rain • Northwest Avalon: 10-15 cm of snow / Very little, if any, rain • Burin Peninsula: 5-15 cm of snow / 5-10 mm of rain • Clarenville Area and the Bonavista Peninsula: 10-15 cm of snow • South Coast: 10-15 cm of snow • West Coast (Gros Morne to Port aux Basques): 5-10 cm of snow • Terra Nova to Gander: 5-10 cm snow • Grand Falls-Windsor and Vicinity: 2-5 cm snow =WINDS= Winds do not appear to be a major concern at this time, and I do not expect that to change. ---------- A more in depth look at our incoming low can be found by watching my #WeatherBeforeTheWeather video as well!
