“Safe Streets/Safe Sweets” On October 31st, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office is sponsoring “Safe Streets/Safe Sweets” – a program aimed at promoting safety for children of all ages as they celebrate one of the most popular evening events of the year. This year, parents and children are invited to bring their candy to the County Courthouse, located at 421 E. Spring Street, Cookeville, TN, between the hours of 5:00 and 9:00 p.m. for complimentary scanning through the metal detectors. Deputies from the Sheriff’s K-9 Division will be on-hand with their dogs to greet families and hand out candy. The first 200 participants will also receive gift bags courtesy of the D.A.R.E. program. “We are committed to providing a greater police presence this Halloween, especially in the rural parts of the County,” said Sheriff Eddie Farris. “We are working closely with local police departments to ensure heightened coverage throughout the County. Our primary goal is to make sure that everyone has a fun and safe holiday this Halloween.” Halloween is a fun time of year for children. As a parent, it is often a source of stress over costumes, candy and, of course, safety. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office recommends that all parents read up on the Halloween Safety Tips offered by the National Safety Council. Here are just a few tips for your consideration: 1. Instruct your children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and avoid trick-or-treating alone. 2. Teach your children to never enter a stranger’s home. 3. Give your children flashlights with fresh batteries to help them see and for others to see them. 4. Insist that treats be brought home for inspection before anything is eaten (or bring their candy to the courthouse for scanning by our deputies) 5. And, remember, ‘When in doubt, throw it out!’
