“¡Salsa Divina” - Some time in October of 1996 I went to a concert in Miami featuring two great Cuban musicians, pianist Bebo Valdes and bassist Israel “Cachao” Lopez. The musicians in both bands led by these iconic figures ranged from saxophonist Paquito D’ Rivera to trombonist Jimmy Bosch. Needless to say, they were all exceptional and I remember being impressed by a white haired violinist, Federico Britos, whom I would later learn was born and raised in Montevideo, Uruguay. His father, Alberto Britos Serrat, was a violinist, lawyer and journalist. Federico began playing violin at the age of five serving as principal chair, soloist, and ultimately Concertmaster with some of the great symphony orchestras of Uruguay, Venezuela, Peru and Cuba, touring extensively throughout the Americas and Europe. Britos, 75 years young, has won six Grammy Awards and his 2010 recording “Voyage” on Sunnyside records is one of my favorites. Recently he released his lastest recording “Federico Britos presents Hot Club of the Americas” in a Latin-jazz tribute to the classic songs by the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, an iconic 1930s-40s jazz band led by violinist Stephan Grappelli and guitarist Django Reinhardt. Thanks to a tip from my good friend Lorig Maranjian, who is spending time in the Miami area, I’ll share a few tracks from Federico’s new CD including her favorite, “Dark eyes” featuring Giovanni Hidalgo on congas. I invite you to tune in tonight “¡Con Salsa!” wbur90.9fm or worldwide on the web: wbur.org from 10:00pm – 3:00am
