We would like to appeal you to join a hunger strike to support Mr. Young-Oh Kim, father of a Sewol Ferry victim and report the progress of the recent signature campaign. 1. A Call for a Hunger Strike To Show Your Supports As of August 21, 2014,Mr. Young-Oh Kim, the father of a victim, was on a hunger strike for 40 days. He was rushed to the hospital today due to health deterioration. Mr. Kim, who lost his child to the Sewol Tragedy, risked his life to go on a hunger strike. In spite of all this,the majority leader of the ruling Saenuri Party and the minority leader of the opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy in South Korea reached a mutual agreement on a special law proposal that was designed to create an impotent special committee without consulting with the bereaved families again. We are now in the process of mobilizing a hunger strike, which is aimed at condemning the South Korean politicians and lawmakers involved, and enacting a more effective special law. The progress of our signature campaign We are writing to report on the progress of our signature campaign. We collected 452 signatures for the short period from August 12th to the 14th. We are overwhelmed by the whole-hearted support you showed by quickly responding to our call. The statement you signed was read by Professor Taehyun Nam, one of the organizers of the signature drive, to estimate 50,000 participants at the rally organized by the National Campaign on August 15th. It was also sent to the Korean media. Our signature drive drew more attention thanks to the sympathy hunger strike in which Professor Nam participated on August 13th. It was received with an overwhelming enthusiasm and widely reported by South Korean press (see the links below). On a different note, the rally was blocked by two layers of police buses, disallowing non-participants to witness the protest. It was a chilling reminder of the authoritarian tendency of the current government. His participation and the statement that bore the signature of 452 scholars outside Korea attracted much attention, and more importantly, demonstrated international concern and support for the victims and their families of the Sewol tragedy. We trust the collective voice in which we participated at least stopped, albeit only temporarily, the faulty special law agreed between the leaders of the main parties. Our statement added to the growing demand that a special law with subpoena and prosecutorial power be instituted.
