(Series #7) Dealing with the Devil’s Temptations Matthew 4:1-11 4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. (Temptations from the devil are inevitable and are allowed of God to fulfill His divine purpose.) 4:2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. (Temptations come to us at times regarding our desire to have a natural physical or spiritual legitimate need met outside the perfect sovereign will of God.) 4:3 And when the tempter came to him, he said (Temptations are the voice of the devil speaking to the heart consisting of the mind, emotions, and will of the believer.), If thou be the Son of God, (Temptations come in a form that cast doubt of who we are in Christ and who the LORD Jesus Christ is.) command that these stones be made bread. (Temptation’s playground is first the mind of the believer, for the mind is the chief organ of intellectual, emotional, willful, physical, and spiritual activity.) 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, (Temptations are overcome through rebuking the devil with appropriate Scripture[s].) Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. (Temptations are overcome by saturating one’s heart with the absolute authority of the Word of God. Only as the Word of God takes root in the believer’s heart is he able to overcome the bombardment of the devil’s temptations and the satanic strongholds, he has in place; see Hebrews 4:12.) 4:5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, (Temptations take us into the realm of potential direct influence, deception, and domination of the devil in both sinful worldliness and self-righteous religion.) 4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. (Temptations come to us at times regarding our tendency to be presumptuous regarding God’s person, power, and purpose outside the perfect sovereign will of God.) 4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. (Temptations are overcome by not being presumptuous regarding God, but by pleasing the Lord thy God, by faith, through loving obedience.) 4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; (Temptations offer us all the satanic pleasures, prosperities, pursuits, positions, powers, passions, and poisons that our sinful flesh and self-righteous religious souls desire.) 4:9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. (Temptations come at time times regarding the tendency of the flesh and the self-righteous religious soul to do what the devil would have us do outside the perfect sovereign will of God.) 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: (Temptations are overcome by directly dealing with the devil through the person, power, and purpose of the LORD.) for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. (Temptations are overcome by sincerely and scripturally worshipping and serving the Lord thy God.) 4:11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. (Temptations from the devil are only for a season, but he will be back; therefore SUBMIT TO GOD, RESIST THE DEVIL, AND HE WILL FLEE FROM YOU AGAIN AND AGAIN!) Please pray for the H.O.P.E.
